Are allergies a subconscious mistake?

allergies and allergic reactions, a mistake from your subconscious mind and immune system?

Have you ever wondered why some people are allergic to substances which are completely harmless for others such as cat hair or citric fruit? Do you think allergies are purely a physical/medical issue, or do you feel there might be more to it? In the PSYCH-K® Health and Wellbeing Program I first learnt about the role the subconscious mind plays in allergic reactions, and lately I have investigated this topic a bit more. In this article I will share some insights and ideas I have found. Keep in mind that I am not a medical doctor. Allergies can have serious consequences for your health, so always consult a physician if you have an allergy, especially if it causes a severe reaction.

nocebo effect?
Most of us are familiar with the so called placebo effect; the situation where a (fake) medical treatment works because the patient beliefs it works. I think it is common sense to suppose that the opposite can also be true; something can harm you because you believe it will harm you. This is called the nocebo effect. In his article “The Nature Of Dis-Ease”¹ well-known cell biologist Dr. Bruce Lipton poses an interesting question: “Considering that a minimum of one third of all medical healings are attributed to the placebo effect, what percentage of illness and disease might be the result of negative thought in the nocebo effect?” So I wonder if an allergic reaction can in fact be caused by the nocebo effect, a misinterpretation by the mind of an environmental signal.

under-informed immune system?
In his article “Immunity”² Bruce Lipton writes that in order to develop a strong and healthy immune system, a baby needs to be exposed to all sorts of bacteria and other substances including allergens. For this reason he recommends parents to avoid being too worried about hygiene. According to Lipton most allergens themselves are not very toxic, but in a not correctly developed immune system they may trigger an over-reaction in our body.

confused immune system?
Allergy alternatives treatment specialist Rob Mesrie describes in his article “Is our immune system confused?”³ how our immune system in the process of learning and remembering, can accidently label an inert substance as harmful and create a pattern of attacking that substance. He describes a particular origin of confusion which I find fascinating. According to Mesrie, your immune system’s task is to protect YOU from the outside world, and this can be difficult when you don’t have a clear idea of who you are, a clear sense of identity, or when your role in life and sense of self are changing. He states that allergies can actually begin or end when our identity changes as our beliefs about ourselves and the world change.

unconscious response?
Another interesting article which I found is “Are Allergies an Unconscious Response?”⁴ by Dr. Jill Cohn, Clinic Director at Berkeley & Remote Allergy Relief & Chiropractic. In her clinic she uses a healing modality to create a positive association in a person’s unconscious response system between an allergen and the healing procedure. This way the person’s system learns to interpret the allergen, which it used to interpret as a threat, as something harmless.

Subconscious mistake?
So, what do you think? Could your allergy be a mistake from your subconscious mind and your immune system? If you think this might be the case, you may be interested in doing a PSYCH-K® session to not only find out, using a special protocol, where and when things went wrong, but also do one or more subconscious change processes called Balances to update the beliefs your subconscious mind holds. The information your system reveals during these processes might surprise you but at the same time you may feel that somehow “it makes sense” to you. And during the Balance you may experience a sense of relieve and letting go of old trauma you don’t need any more.
A PSYCH-K® session is not a healing or treatment and it is never a substitute for medical treatment. However, looking into the subconscious aspect of your allergy is a wonderful opportunity to learn something about yourself, to heal trauma, to grow and evolve, and to move from limitation to expansion.
